Dining room from the Golden Age
The dining room is set entirely in the Late Baroque period, just before 1690. This period in time is also referred to as the Golden Age. The Golden Age was a period in Dutch history, particularly in the seven northern United Provinces, in which Dutch trade, science, art and military prowess (particularly at sea) occupied the highest position on the world stage. Flourishing trade led to a large and very wealthy merchant class. The new-found prosperity also led to greater interest in sponsoring arts, literature and science.
Five figures are present around the table. The sixth seat is still empty… they wait expectantly for the sixth guest who appears to have just entered the room…
In this scene, wealth and richness had to play a prominent role. The ladies and gentlemen are wealthily dressed and adorned. The costumes are made from luxurious fabrics, and feature lots of lace, gold brocade and embroidery.
On both sides of the room there are butlers who await their orders. The table has been beautifully laid: gold cutlery, gold with marble candelabra, gold and crystal glasses and carafes, porcelain dining service and, of course, a table bell from the same period.
